Why were Slumdog Millionaire and Titanic so good? It was the story and especially the epic conflict. At the same time, would you watch a movie about someone going to the office from 9-5, getting home, drinking some beers, and then going to bed? Of course not.
A good story is a meaningful life according to Donald Miller in his new book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. He looks at the elements of a story: conflict, character change, an unknown outcome, and likens them to the elements of someones life.
You must purposefully push yourself to create a good story. Only then does that add meaning to your life. While I don't agree with the religious elements he introduces in the book, it is a very worthwhile read. It makes you think about life just a little differently.
Thanks to Chris Guillebeau for the book recommendation.
