How I Negotiated a $39.99 Credit from Verizon Wireless

by Adam Kornfield on October 2nd, 2009

Following my 30% rate reduction at Time Warner Cable, I wanted to see if Verizon Wireless would discount my mobile phone bill to match the lower rates that MetroPCS now offers in NYC.

Since I’ve been a customer of Verizon Wireless for over 4 years, would they do anything just to make me happy?  I learned some of these tactics from Ramit over at I Will Teach You To Be Rich.
The Pitch

  • Its a recession
  • My income is suffering
  • I’m a loyal customer. I pay on time, every time
  • I love Verizon Wireless service
  • I really don’t want to move somewhere else, but I need to save the money

Long story short:
I run through the pitch twice and the customer service rep offers me a month of service for free worth $39.99.  Taking 15 minutes to make the call, they paid me $159.96/hr.
